A hiker spends a night alone on a mountain after missing his spot, raises $34,000 in fundraiser for his rescuer

Thierry Vrain, a 77-year-old hiker from Courtenay, B.C., got lost during his annual trek up Mount Becher. After a wrong detour, he spent a harrowing night alone in the woods.

Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue eventually located him.

In gratitude, Vrain organized a fundraiser that raised $34,000 for the rescue team, emphasizing the need for financial support.

Despite some government funding, the team relies on donations.

Vrain hopes his story will inspire more people to support local search and rescue teams, emphasizing their vital role beyond mountain rescues, such as aiding in floods and fires.
