Meet The First Female Speaker of Nova Scotia House of Assembly

The Honourable Karla MacFarlane was initially elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Pictou West in 2013 and secured re-election in 2017 and 2021.

On October 12, 2023, Karla MacFarlane was elected as the Speaker of the House of Assembly, making her the first woman to hold this prestigious position in Nova Scotia.

Throughout her career, she has taken on important roles, including serving as the Minister of Community Services, Minister responsible for L’nu Affairs, and Minister responsible for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women Act.

Karla MacFarlane has also fulfilled key leadership roles within the Progressive Conservative Party, including acting as interim party leader and caucus chair.

Beyond her political commitments, she is a dedicated community volunteer.

Additionally, she currently serves as the Chair of the House of Assembly Management Commission and the Assembly Matters Committee.
