India Stops Issuing New Visas to Canadians

Following Trudeau’s accusation of New Delhi’s involvement in the murder of a Canadian-Sikh leader and the consequent diplomatic sanctions and warning for Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution in India, the Indian government has responded with stringent diplomatic hitbacks.

On Thursday, India restricted new visa issuances to Canadians following the retaliatory warning on Wednesday for Indians to also exercise utmost caution in Canada due to what they consider as “anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence”.

But Trudeau has made it clear that his government is not looking to “provoke or cause problems” with India. Rather, he wants to ensure that rule of law is established and the safety and values of Canadians are protected.

It remains to be seen how the two countries go about fixing this stain on their historic diplomatic relations.
