Over 1,000 Albertans Died of Drug Poisoning This Year

According to a recent report by the province’s substance use surveillance system, 1,169 Albertans have died of drug poisoning deaths since the start of the year, including 168 in July.

This year’s figure is a 14.5% increase from the same period last year.

The situation is “heartbreaking” and “not surprising” for those working at the street level, including Calgary family physician Bonnie Larson.

Dr. Monty Ghosh, an addictions specialist who practices in both Edmonton and Calgary, warns that drug supply is incredibly toxic and keeps shifting week by week.

He believes that it will be very difficult to control the ongoing overdose crisis until the toxic drug supply is controlled.
