“Lord Help Us” — Canadians React to Trudeau’s $90 Million Pledge to Fight Climate Change, Crime and Vaccine Equity in Caribbean

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a significant foreign aid package of nearly $90 million during the Canada-Caribbean Community Summit. 

The summit, entitled “Strategic Partners for a Resilient Future,” focused on climate change, crime, and vaccine equity in the Americas and included representatives from numerous nations and territories, including Haiti and Jamaica.

Trudeau’s aid package includes $58.6 million to support renewable energy projects through the Caribbean Development Bank. An additional $6 million will be directed to the Caribbean Climate Smart Fund. 

The prime minister emphasized Canada’s commitment to development cooperation in the Caribbean region and acknowledged the need for continued efforts.

On the health front, Canada is allocating $18.3 million from the Global Initiative for Vaccine Equity to support Haiti. 

Further funding includes $3.4 million for the Haitian National Police and $3.2 million for the Caribbean Firearms Road Map, which also involves humanitarian assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces.

In total, Canada is committing $89.5 million in new funding to the Caribbean.
