Wab Kinew Sworn in As Canada’s 1st First Nations Premier in Manitoba

Today Wab Kinew was sworn in as Manitoba’s 25th premier, taking over from Conservative Heather Stefanson.

Kinew, who is the leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party (NDP), becomes the 1st First Nations premier in Canada following his victory at the polls.

The swearing-in ceremony is held at The Leaf in Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park and it features performances from the Norman Chief Memorial Dancers and Dakota Hotain Singers.

Kinew has promised to have at least two First Nations women in his cabinet, which would be the first time in Manitoba’s history that First Nations women would serve in cabinet.
